I worked at Adjmi Apparel and I was sexually harassed daily by my supervisor. He would tell me daily that my tattoos and makeup was sexy and mysterious.
The bathrooms had mice.
Syrian owned so treated all women like trash. I wasn’t allowed to wear anything above my knees.
I was waiting for someone to bring up Adjmi. I never worked there, interviewed though a long time ago and thank goodness that I didn’t get the job because a few years later a friend of mine got a job there and hated it. You are correct, they do not respect women.
Hi ! Yes they like hiring by word of mouth a lot over anything that is how I was hired as well and also via agencies. So thats the main reasons why you don’t see their job postings.
I used to work for UO mens. Worked in design for about two years, I would not recommend it. There was no HR department when I was there (not sure if this has changed or not), but my boss was in a somewhat forced, very toxic and uncomfortable relationship with the design director. The design director made it quite clear the only way he would promote the women on the team was by sleeping with him. He eventually propositioned me when I gave my two weeks notice and when I turned him down he tired to black list me from the freelancing I was doing with other teams at UO. The DD was eventually fired like six years later because he was sleeping with an employee who was married and the husband found out and put the whole thing and UO on blast via IG.
Haddad Brands in NYC. Private label that produces kids clothes for Nike, Levi’s, Air Jordan. HORRIBLE management - like an old school boys club. Run by a group of brothers/cousins/male family members. Was in a meeting with one of them who oversaw design/production and I have never heard someone speak so condescendingly to a female VP-level associate. Even though she was right about the topic being discussed, he insisted he was correct and essentially told her to shut up. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough. High turnover rate as well except for a few lifers who have never left and are clearly favorites of the men in power. Also the office space is incredibly depressing - tons of tan cubicles with no windows. Bathrooms aren’t even in the office! You have to use a communal one for the entire building’s floor that is a decent walk - if you’re sick, or pregnant, or handicap I can’t imagine how horrible it would be to need to get to the bathroom. Just so awful all together. Believe they also laid off many employees without warning due to COVID. DO NOT WORK THERE!
Seriously? Almost every company I have worked for in the fashion industry has had a certain level of toxicity. Designers with fragile egos, wealthy owners who care more about their dogs and cars than their employees. Years of dedication, loyalty and excellence and exceeded expectations with very little upwardly mobility offered, only to be demoted by a new VP. That is not to say I have not had some amazing work experiences as well. One temp assignment was only about 5 months but I made some very good friends and loved the job. My advice to anyone finding themselves in a toxic environment is focus on the work and do the best job you possibly can. Always be willing to learn something new and don’t let any negative energy divert your focus on being excellent at what you do. Every once in awhile it will be recognized and appreciated.
I have to agree a lot with some of the posts that there are several toxic environments and companies out there in retail. After 21 years of it I got out and had been in several companies that treated employees terribly.
I couldn’t be happier and more healthy in my life.
It’s sad as I love fashion and been in retail since I was young teenager but it’s incredibly toxic.
Stable as in you will get a paycheck yes lol But the entire division is built basically off of stealing other companies designs, and having it remade in a shitty fabric with your logo and BAM billion dollar business. Very old school garmento, no real processes, no real designing, no innovation, lack of support/employees, no structure. They don’t even have a PLM system. It’s almost like the company took a bunch of people who are ok working like its 1942 and forcing them to work 14 hours a day and that’s the sports division at GIII. Go team.
Wow talk about not wanting to keep up with the times. I’m shocked at how archaic some companies are. I’m like how do you even sell anyone anything between these crappy CADs and no PLM… It really makes me think I could easily start my own company.
It is important to note that some company reviews are made by disgruntled former employees. Just because someone on a confidential forum said something bad about a company or a supervisor doesn’t make it true.
All of these comments need to be taken with a grain of salt.
