For freelance gigs, which option is a more popular one?

I use Behance. I find it’s more often used for Creative Directors, Designers and Art Directors.
Anyone ever experience a factory messaging them directly in Upwork without posting the job? A factory reached out to me about a potential project. They asked for examples, which I provided, then asked for pricing, so I gave them a proposal/quote& added that they needed to go through upwork for payment - I don’t want to jeopardize my standing with Upwork & I don’t know this factory. No reply. Is this a scam to get free work!?
I’m saying you are being scammed but asking for work samples is a pretty common way for cheap companies to do market research.
