Career Advice: Unsure About Next Steps

Hi friends!

I’m 27 and an AE at a Luxury Wholesale position. Currently, I’m not even selling — this position has been moreso a lot of backend work more than anything. I love my current job, but I don’t feel like I’m being used to my fullest potential. I was thinking of pivoting into becoming a stylist and working my way up from that. I love fashion and want to stay in the luxury industry but don’t know where to even go from here.

PS have been in the general wholesale industry for 5yrs.

Any tips/advice helps! I appreciate it and thank you in advance

If you have an Account Executive title currently, it seems that you’d want to work as an Account Executive at another company? Going from AE to Stylist would be a step-backwards professionally. Maybe use your current title to get a job that involves more selling with a different company?

That makes sense. I was thinking of also just doing styling on the side but after my 9-5 which might be hard since I’m in LA.

As someone who’s been in the “real world” for about 15 years more than you – I have a lot of wisdom to impart!

First, it’s wonderful you said you love your current job! EMBRACE THAT! The job market right now is rough so I do not recommend gambling in this economy. Why do you not feel like you’re not being utilized to your fullest potential? Is there any way to flip that thought and create an opportunity out of it?

Secondly, styling is essentially being an artist. Are you a creative? Do you have a network of brands, press showrooms, people who will pay you to style them and/or projects? If you don’t mind starting from the bottom then I’d say YOLO - go for it. At the end of the day it’s a lifestyle and takes YEARS to build your portfolio and resources so if you’re serious, perhaps assist someone or do it on the side until you build enough rep.

All my best to you! Truly!
