Starting a UX Design Certification at Parsons — Looking for Advice on How to Build Traction While Learning

Use this space to discuss the good and bad of fashion-specific technologies.Hey everyone,

I’m about to start the UX Design Fundamentals certification at Parsons, and I want to do things differently this time around. When I got my B.A. in Fashion Marketing & Management, I made the mistake of waiting until after graduation to start building a career path — and that cost me time and momentum.

Now I’m trying to be intentional. I want to use this certification as a way to get hands-on experience, build connections, and create a portfolio that actually works in the real world — not just something I turn in for class.

For anyone who’s already gone through a UX or design certification — or who’s blended fashion and tech in their career — I’d love to hear:

  • How did you start building credibility before you were fully certified?

  • What kinds of projects or portfolio pieces made the biggest impact early on?

  • How did you find real opportunities (internships, freelance, collaborations) while still in your program?

  • And if you’ve worked at that intersection of fashion, design, and tech, how did you make your background an advantage instead of a mismatch?

I’m hoping this can be a thread where people share what actually worked for them — not just theory. Let’s make this useful for everyone trying to pivot into UX or fashion tech while studying.
