Hi everyone! By the title you can probably imagine I am very flustered. I recently moved to the New York area (since April) and I have been full-time looking for an entry level job in fashion (preferably planner, buyer, sales, or design). I have applied to almost 5,000 jobs and I’ve gotten 10 interviews. Every interview ends in ghosting or a “we’re still interviewing candidates and will get back to you.” I want to work in fashion so badly, so you can imagine how disheartening it is to not have anything yet. I have a college degree and I worked at a menswear wholesale company for a year. I’ve also worked at a sewing machine company and I was the lead fashion writer for a local newspaper. I’ve had recruiters reach out and I’ve reached out to multiple companies. I would love any and all advice anyone has. Do you know of any companies definitely hiring for an entry level role? Do you know anyone I could directly reach out to about getting a job? I’m not picky about salary or workload. I will gladly work 24/7 for $50,000 (even though I would probably need a second job to afford rent and whatnot). Please, please, please help (I’m on the floor begging lol).
Without knowing more about your background…
…does your resume indicate that you are in New York? Recruiters won’t even look at your resume for an entry level position if it doesn’t clearly indicate that you are local.
…are you customizing your resume for each application? If not, you are allowing recruiters to draw their own conclusions about your resume. If you are applying for a design position, it should say “designer” right below your name. If you are applying for a tech design position, it should say “technical designer” right below your name, etc…
…is your resume ATS optimized? Word parsing, keyword matching, etc…
