Tariffs on goods coming in from China will drastically affect the textile industry. Are manufacturers planning to move production to other countries? Will retailers accept inevitable price hikes? Will consumers finally understand how tariffs work or simply reduce spending drastically. Any possibility that some manufacturers will try to do cut and sew domestically? It seems that no matter what direction we go, apparel and home furnishings products will be more costly.

I wouldn’t mind tariffs on Chinese Fast Fashion like Shein & Temu. Similarly, I wouldn’t mind tariffs on the factories that use Uighur slave labor.

Good point. Sadly, though, it’s not likely that these will be targeted to specific cases.

There are currently no “tariffs” on Shein + Temu, because they ship directly to consumers in under $800 per package, not likely to change as congress can’t seem to pass a law to close the loophole ☹

I’ve heard talk of the US removing the di minimis rule ($800 p/package) to target Chinese direct shippers.

> Some businesses are planning more production outside of China or mulling price increases. Others are maintaining the status quo.

The products I work on were affected by the tariffs placed back in 2018 and, while some of my manufacturing has moved out of China, not all of it has. And what has moved has been a journey to get the production quality up to snuff. Mostly what happened was, prices were raised and, 7 years later, we’re still working on moving production out of China.

I’m sure COVID slowed a lot of that process of re-location and the price hikes weren’t felt in the same way because of inflation. But I do think that, even with tariffs, near shoring or re-shoring will take years. Especially if the incoming administration is just going to apply tariffs and not offer any funding to set up factories domestically.

And even with subsidies to set up factories, I’d bank on 5ish years’ time to get the new facility to a place where it could produce at scale.
